DESCRIPTION:Mark Dawson will take us on a tour of the wildlife friendly Home Farm. This is a delightful old-fashioned farm with an Oast house and wonderful hedges\, ponds and valleys which has been farmed with nature in mind. SUMMARY:Guided walk and talk on a Community Eels Project on the River Mole
DESCRIPTION:A 90-minute walk and talk by someone from the South East Rivers Trust. They are working alongside partners on the Thames Catchment Community Eels project and will be doing lots of work along the River Mole and its tributaries to aid the long-term survival of the critically endangered European eel.  They will talk about the habitats present\, the processes and of course eels and other fish and wildlife. The walk will be along the River Mole in Norbury Park. DESCRIPTION:Following the AGM\, Matthew Oates will talk about the success of Purple Emperor Butterflies within Knepp’s rewilding enterprise.  Matthew was the former National Specialist for Nature within the NT. He initially worked in nature conservation practice\, specialising in grazing regimes\, scrub management and lowland habitats. He then worked to help realise the enormous potential of NT in nature conservation\, at site and landscape levels. He is particularly drawn to strengthening people’s relationships with nature and is a well-known broadcaster and author with a particular passion for butterflies and poetry. \nThis event will be held at Mickleham Village Hall as our normal venue Juniper Hall is undergoing refurbishment. The address is 20 Dell Close\, Mickleham\, RH5 6EE. If you are coming from the A24 Dell close is the first turning on the left\, nearly opposite the entrance to Box Hill School.

SUMMARY:Moths\, Mammals and a Folly Good Time
DESCRIPTION:A walk from Juniper Hall Field Studies Centre led by their staff.  We will open up some small mammal traps and look at the moth trap from the previous night and also look under reptile refuges on site.  We will then be shown how FSC work with biodiversity at the centre (looking at blue butterfly scrapings\, the butterfly garden\, walled garden etc.).  After this we will climb up through Charlotte’s wood to Broadwood Tower and stop here or on Lodge Hill for a picnic and then loop back to Juniper Hall after lunch. \nMeet at Juniper Hall Field Studies Centre\, Old London Road\, Mickleham\, RH5 6DA. There will be a reasonable climb involved\, so good footwear will be needed. Please bring your own picnic.

SUMMARY:Birdsong Walk
DESCRIPTION:Nick Unwin will take us on a walk on Box Hill to see what birds are around and help us identify their songs. The walk will start from the Information Pentagon outside the shop and go wherever the birds lead us. It will be a reasonably gentle walk but may involve going part way down and up a slope. An early start should increase the chance of seeing and hearing more birds\, and we can return for coffee and cake in the shop. Binoculars may be useful. No dogs please. There will be a limited number of places on this walk to ensure we can hear well.

SUMMARY:A Talk on “Blue Butterflies” followed by dinner at the Burford Bridge hotel
DESCRIPTION:From April to September a succession of beautiful blue butterflies can be seen on Box Hill. This talk will look at their very different lifestyles and will focus particularly on how Box Hill is playing a key role in a Butterfly Conservation project aimed at increasing numbers of Small Blues between Guildford and Reigate. \nThe talk will be given by Gail Jeffcoate (author of The Box Hill Book of Butterflies\, and previous Butterfly Recorder for Surrey).  It will take place in the Tithe Barn at the Burford Bridge Hotel and will be followed by a 3 course meal in the lovely Garden Room. Choices will be available including a vegetarian option.  The hotel is very kindly providing the barn for the talk and the Garden room for dinner and offering us a special priced three course meal. DESCRIPTION:Mark Dawson\, NT Lead Ranger for Box Hill and Headley\, will lead us through Box Hill Farm to the riverside to see how this area has developed since the farm was acquired and the riverside walk reinstated in 2016. We will have a walk along the riverside with a picnic by the water. Mark will point out the wildlife and chat to us about the latest plans for the Farm.  We will enjoy a picnic and a glass of wine or soft drink for £8 per head. \nMeet on the hard standing on Box Hill Farm\, through the red farm gate off the road to Boxhurst. Coming from Dorking on the A25 take the left-hand turn signposted to Lower Box Hill Farm.  This road goes back on itself and you follow it all the way round until you see a red gate on the left just before you get to Boxhurst house. DESCRIPTION:Henry Barnard\, NT Lead Ranger for North Downs West\, will lead us on a walk around Abinger Roughs.  Henry will talk to us about the history of the area and show us some ancient trees linked to the Abinger Hall Estate as well as the flower sprinkled grassland.  We will take a look at a Bronze Age Burial mount and the Bishop Wilberforce memorial and walk along to Piney Copse which was donated by EM Forster. \nMeet in the Abinger Roughs Car Park which is west of Dorking off A25\, Dorking to Guildford Road. SUMMARY:Make a Christmas Wreath
DESCRIPTION:Amanda McCormick\, NT Ranger will help us to make our own Christmas Wreath and other decorations.  The natural materials will be collected beforehand.  Please bring gloves and secateurs if you have them.  If you want to “bling” up your wreath bring your own materials. Amanda will provide coloured ribbons and silver teasels. At the end\, you will have a lovely wreath to take away. This event will take place at Warren Farm Barns. A light lunch and mulled wine will be provided. £12 per head.

DESCRIPTION:Reigate Fort was built in 1898 as part of the London Defence Scheme and was restored in 2000.  Marc Russell\, Area Manager for Reigate Hill and Gatton Park will lead us on a tour of the atmospheric buildings to discover what military life was like in the late 1890’s. Meet in the Wray Lane Car Park\, Reigate\, RH2 0HX. If you would like to bring some food or buy some in the Car Park café\, we can picnic by the Fort after the tour.

SUMMARY:Chalk Grassland talk and Dinner
DESCRIPTION:A light hearted overview of Box Hill’s chalk grassland followed by dinner at the Burford Bridge Hotel\,  Monday November 21st at 6.30 at the Burford Bridge Hotel \nCatherine McCusker\, NT Box Hill Learning and Events Officer\, will give us a talk on different aspects of chalk grassland and what makes it so special in an entertaining and informative talk in the Tithe Barn at the Burford Bridge Hotel. This will be followed by a 3 course meal in the lovely Garden Room. Choices will be available including a vegetarian option.  The hotel is very kindly providing the barn for the talk and the Garden room for dinner and offering us a special priced three course meal. The total cost will be £22 per person for the event. Guests/non-members are very welcome. We will need to know numbers well in advance for this event so please let Lyn Richards (lyn@mra.uk.net) know before the 12th November if you intend to come.
